Culvert No. XII was used to ‘drain the water that accumulates at profile 30-d, which cannot flow off to the right or left’. This is how a preliminary report of 1843 describes the plans. The old district road from Marktschorgast to Himmelkron had to be realigned due to railway construction. In conjunction with this culvert, a bridge for a new road running parallel to the railway was built in 1846 / 47. The structures therefore form a unit.
Even if the culvert only holds a small amount of water in summer, large quantities of meltwater discharge here in spring. It then accumulates to the east of the road, pours over a step into the inlet and flows beneath the road, after passing another step. After that, the water flows into the culvert‘s entry chute. The water then runs below the tracks, passes another step and reaches the outlet on the west.
In 1985, this culvert was refurbished but the old structure is still largely intact.
Today it is overloaded by heavy timber haulage. The iron railing to prevent falling was not installed until spring 2014 as part of the trail redesign.
